The story
The Earth, one of the first beings. She gave birth to Uranus the Sky and then, with him, to the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred-Handers. When Uranus imprisoned their children inside her, she made a great sickle and persuaded Cronus to use it.
How it ends
She outlasted every generation of gods. Later she raised the Giants and the monster Typhon against Zeus, but both were defeated.
Still with us today
The “Gaia hypothesis” of the scientist James Lovelock, which treats the Earth as one self-regulating system, is named after her.
